Homeopathic Hypericum: Natural Relief for Nerve Pain and Injuries

Updated: Sep 23

By Kirsty Richards DipHomNZ

Often referred to as the "Arnica of the nerves," Hypericum (Or Hypericum Perforatum), is the number one remedy for nerve pain and injuries. Anytime there is an injury to nerve rich areas such as fingers and toes, or "shooting" type pains, Hypericum can help.

What is Hypericum Perforatum?

Hypericum perforatum, commonly known as St. John’s Wort, is a flowering plant that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. In homeopathy, it's known for its powerful ability to heal nerve-related injuries and pain. Hypericum is particularly effective in cases where nerves are damaged or traumatized, providing relief from pain and promoting healing.

Unlike HERBAL St John's Wort, HOMEOPATHIC Hypericum is safe to take if someone is

currently using antidepressants or SSRI medication. Herbal St John's Wort cannot be taken alongside these medications, however, Homeopathic Hypericum can as it does not

contain the raw ingredient.

When to Use Homeopathic Hypericum

  1. Nerve Injuries:

If you've ever experienced a nerve injury such as a crushed finger or a stubbed toe - ouch!! - these are classic situations where Hypericum can help. In fact, any time there is a blow to the spine, or an injury to areas rich in nerve endings, think of Hypericum. It is also often used after surgical procedures involving nerve damage.

2. Puncture Wounds:

Hypericum is also an excellent remedy for puncture wounds, especially those that cause shooting or sharp pain. For example, stepping on a nail or having a deep cut which leads to nerve pain.

3. Back and Neck Pain:

For injuries involving the spine or tailbone, such as a fall or a blow to the back, Hypericum helps relieve the sharp, shooting pains that often accompany these.

4. Dental Procedures:

Post-dental work, especially after extractions or procedures that affect the nerves, you can take Hypericum to help soothe the pain and aid in the healing process.

The Importance of Having a Homeopathic Remedy Kit

The great thing about having a homeopathic remedy kit at home, is when things happen,

you've got the tools on hand to deal with them! Often emergency or Acute situations arise at unsociable hours - such as in the middle of the night - and if you don't have a remedy kit on hand, or the remedies you need, you're wasting precious healing time until you can source the remedy.

I recommend and stock the Helios Basic 36 Remedy kit, as well as the Helios Pet Remedy Kit.

I particularly LOVE these kits because they are in a light, yet secure travel case and each contains a free, comprehensive guide on how to use the remedies and when, as well as a materia medica section. Both kits include Hypericum. I have affordable refills available too.

If you'd like to purchase one or both of these, you can do that here:

How to Use Homeopathic Hypericum

Hypericum is available in various potencies, typically ranging from 6C to 200C. The potency you choose will depend on the severity and nature of the injury.

Low Potency (6C - 30C): For minor nerve pain or injuries, a lower potency like 6C can be taken 2-3 times a day until symptoms improve, reducing frequency as the pain subsides.

I don't recommend taking it for more than 5 days in a row unless under the guidance of a Homeopath.

High Potency (200C and above): In cases of severe nerve pain or major injuries, a higher potency like 200C can be used. It’s best to consult with a homeopathic practitioner before using high-potency remedies to ensure proper dosage and frequency. There may be other remedies that are needed alongside Hypericum to promote faster recovery.

For chronic conditions or severe injuries, it’s always advisable to consult with a qualified homeopathic practitioner to determine the most appropriate remedy and potency.

Dosage Tips:

  • Allow the remedy to dissolve under your tongue.

  • Avoid eating or drinking 15 minutes before and after taking the remedy.

  • Repeat the dosage as needed, reducing frequency as symptoms improve.

  • Store Homeopathic remedies in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong odors.
