Torticollis, also known as "wry neck" or "twisted neck," is a condition where the neck muscles contract involuntarily, causing the head to twist to one side. This results in an abnormal, asymmetrical head or neck position. Torticollis can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired due to various factors such as muscle or nerve injury, inflammation, or infections. In babies, congenital torticollis is often due to tightness of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, which runs along the side of the neck. This condition can lead to limited range of motion in the neck, and if untreated, may cause muscle imbalance and developmental issues. Treatment options include physical therapy, stretching exercises, and in some cases, surgery.
Firstly, Torticollis in babies, also known as "twisted neck," occurs when an infant's neck muscles are tight on one side, causing the head to tilt
This can happen due to the baby's position in the womb or birth trauma
Signs include a head tilt to one side and difficulty turning the head
Parents might notice a flat spot on the baby's head from lying in one position
Treatment involves physical therapy with gentle stretching exercises to improve neck movement
Early intervention is important to ensure proper development and prevent long-term issues
Some of the key homeopathic remedies to treat this include:
🌿 Bryonia is often recommended for pain and stiffness, especially when movement worsens the discomfort.
🌱 Rhus Toxicodendron is useful for stiffness that improves with movement.
🌸 Gelsemium may help when the neck muscles feel heavy and weak.
🌾 Belladonna can be effective for acute neck pain and stiffness that come on suddenly, especially with redness and heat.
🍃 Calc Carb might be considered if the condition presents with muscle stiffness and slow development. This remedy is often recommended for children who are slow to develop physically, tend to be chubby, and may sweat excessively, especially on the head.
All of these remedies are available in the Helios Basic 36 Remedy Kit, I highly recommend this kit, it’s great value, has a handy travel case and a comprehensive, easy to follow remedy guide. You can purchase that here:
The best approach to treat Torticollis is to see a Homeopath. Homeopathy is an individualised form of medicine - the most reliable results come when the baby's entire symptom picture is matched to the appropriate remedy.
